How to Cut Stone Veneer & Thin Brick

Cutting stone veneer and thin brick comes down to one decision: does the cut show? Exposed edges — outside corners, the top course of a wainscot, the reveal around a window — need a clean, chip-free cut. Rough cuts that get buried in mortar or hidden behind the next piece can be fast and ugly. Match the blade and the technique to whether the edge is visible, and veneer work gets a lot easier.

The “does the cut show” rule
Before you pick a blade, sort every cut into one of two buckets.
Hidden cuts — the edge gets covered by mortar, grout, or the next piece. Cuts to length on a flat that butts into a corner unit. The bottom course that sits below grade or behind trim. For these, speed wins: a segmented or turbo diamond blade cuts fast, and a little chipping on a buried edge costs you nothing.
Exposed cuts — the edge is visible in the finished wall. Outside-corner miters, the top of a partial-height application, cuts around outlets and switches, the edge that meets a window or door casing. For these, clean wins: a continuous-rim blade, cut wet, slow feed. One chip on a visible edge means you’re pulling the piece and starting over.
Sort first, then cut. Most installers waste time using a slow, careful wet cut on edges nobody will ever see, or — worse — using a fast segmented blade on a corner miter and chipping the face.
Blade selection by material
Veneer isn’t one material. Manufactured stone, natural stone, and thin brick each cut differently.

Manufactured stone veneer is the most forgiving. Most of it is a lightweight concrete product, so a 4.5-inch dry diamond blade on an angle grinder cuts it cleanly enough for most jobsite trim. Many installers also score-and-snap or use a stone splitter for straight breaks on flats. For the cleanest exposed edges, step up to a wet masonry saw with a continuous rim.
Natural stone veneer is harder and denser — it wears a blade faster and fractures if you force it. For a clean exposed edge, a turbo rim (or a continuous rim with slurry slots) beats a plain continuous rim on dense stone: it clears slurry and runs cooler, where a plain continuous rim can glaze and overheat. Either way, cut wet and let the blade feed at its own pace; pushing natural stone is how you crack the piece halfway through the cut.
Thin brick is the trap. It looks easy, but fired clay is brittle and chips on the face if you cut it fast or with a segmented blade. Continuous rim, wet, slow feed — and on visible pieces, score the face first.
Bond matters too, not just rim: manufactured veneer is soft and abrasive (cast concrete) and wants a harder bond, while fired thin brick is hard and brittle and wants a softer bond — the wrong bond either glazes or wears out fast. The chip-free cut, step by step
When the edge shows, the technique matters as much as the blade.

Cut into the show face. A diamond blade chips on the side where it exits the material, so the visible face goes on the side the blade enters. On a standard wet saw — blade above, cutting down into the top — that means cut face-up, so the blade exits the back. (The exception is a saw whose blade rises up through the table; there it’s reversed, so confirm with a quick test cut on scrap.) Orientation is the main control; a shallow score on the show face is added insurance on premium pieces. A dry grinder chips more and is harder to control, so use it for rough and hidden cuts and leave the visible edges to a wet saw.

Score, then cut. A shallow scoring pass on the face — 1/8 inch deep — gives the blade a clean channel to follow and dramatically reduces face chipping on the full cut. Worth the extra ten seconds on every exposed piece.

Slow, steady feed. Let the diamonds do the work. Forcing the cut chips brittle materials (thin brick, dense natural stone) and overheats the blade on everything. If the saw bogs, ease off — don’t push harder.

Support both sides. A piece that drops or flexes as the blade finishes the cut snaps a ragged edge instead of a clean one. Support the offcut so it doesn’t break away under its own weight.

Keep water at the blade. Wet cutting cools the blade, flushes slurry, and is the single biggest factor in a clean edge on natural stone and thin brick.

Don’t overcut a notch. A cutout for an outlet or hose bib is two cuts meeting at an inside corner — and a round blade traps people here. Because the blade is round, it cuts deeper on the underside than the line shows on top, so if you run each cut until the face reaches the corner, the back is already overcut and the piece can split. Stop the saw cuts short of the inside corner and finish it with a grinder, a ring saw, or a careful tap with a chisel.
Corners and returns
The cleanest corner is the one you don’t cut.
Manufactured and natural stone veneer lines sell pre-formed corner units — L-shaped pieces that wrap an outside corner in one piece with no visible seam. Use them. They’re faster than mitering and they look right. Order corners by the linear foot of outside corner on the job, not by guesswork — running short mid-wall is the classic veneer-job delay.
When you do have to miter — an odd angle, a detail with no stock corner — cut a clean 45 on a wet saw with a continuous rim and dry-fit before you set it. A mitered stone corner shows a seam no matter how clean the cut, so reserve it for situations where a corner unit won’t work. And always follow the veneer manufacturer’s installation instructions — corner treatments, mortar, and setting specs vary by product line.
For inside corners, you usually don’t cut at all — the flats butt together and the mortar joint hides the intersection.
Wet vs dry — and silica
Wet cutting gives the cleanest edge, controls dust, and is the right call for any exposed cut and any volume work. A wet masonry saw or a wet tile saw is the veneer installer’s workhorse.
Dry cutting with a grinder is for jobsite trim — quick cuts to fit a flat, a notch around an outlet. It’s faster to set up but it throws dust. Use a blade rated for dry cutting (usually a turbo or segmented rim) — a wet-only continuous-rim blade run dry overheats and can warp the core.
That dust is the part installers underrate. Both manufactured and natural stone veneer contain crystalline silica. Manufactured veneer is cast concrete — silica. Natural stone — silica. Cutting it dry releases respirable silica that’s regulated under OSHA’s silica standard, 29 CFR 1926.1153. The compliant paths:
- Wet cut — water suppresses the dust at the source. Simplest compliance.
- Dry cut with capture — a dust shroud on the grinder feeding a dust collector that meets OSHA Table 1: a 99%+ (HEPA) filter, the airflow the tool calls for, and a filter-cleaning mechanism (a plain shop HEPA vac clogs on fine silica and stops pulling).
- Outdoor dry cut with PPE — the fallback, not a clean Table 1 method: open air plus a properly fitted respirator matched to the exposure. An N95 is the floor; heavy dust can require a P100 or a PAPR. Uncontrolled dry cutting can trigger a formal exposure assessment, so prefer wet cutting or capture whenever you can.

Tool setup by job size
One-off or trim work — a 4.5-inch angle grinder with a continuous-rim diamond blade for exposed cuts and a segmented blade for hidden cuts. Add a dust shroud if you’re cutting indoors. This handles a fireplace surround or a small accent wall.
A full veneer wall or a production crew — a wet masonry saw or a 10-inch wet tile saw is worth the setup. Cleaner edges, faster cuts, dust controlled at the blade, and far less fatigue than fighting a grinder for a day. Pair it with a stone splitter if you’re running manufactured stone, for fast straight breaks on flats.
